Gardiner Bond Approved by One Vote; Gardiner Receives Grant

After some news outlets reported that the Gardiner open space ballot measure was turned down by voters on election day, results showed that the measure passed by one vote--961-960, after absentee ballots were tallied. A recount will probably be conducted to confirm the results. Approval will allow the town to borrow up to $1.5 million to purchase property or development rights to preserve the rural character of the town.

Town officials also got word that Gardiner will receive a $356,026 grant from the federal Tansportation Enhancement Program. Gardiner plans to use the grant to construct sidewalks in the hamlet and to provide some drainage work. The town is targeting the work to be completed by 2008.
