Will the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge be a Walkway?

Walkway Over the Hudson, a group working to make the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge accessible to the public for use as a pedestrian walkway, has been encouraged by structural inspections that have examined the underwater piers of the structure. The bridge crosses the Hudson River from Highland on the Ulster County side to Poughkeepsie on the Dutchess County side and has not been used since a fire in 1974. Other engineering inspections will be performed to determine the potential of converting the bridge to a walkway.

Walkway envisions the walkway over the Hudson as part of a larger rail trail which would connect some current trails and span from New Paltz in Ulster County to Hopewell Junction in Dutchess County. Walkway's goal is to have a pedestrian bridge opening by September 2009, in time to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage on the Hudson River.
