New Paltz Receives Grant to Build Bridge Over Wallkill River

The town of New Paltz has been promised $1.04 million in the form of a federal grant in order to design and construct a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Wallkill River. When completed, it will connect the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail to the Ulster County Fairgrounds and the Ulster County Public Pool.

The bridge will be a welcomed advance to reduce traffic on the the current bridge over the Wallkill on Rt. 299, especially for big events like the Ulster County Fair and the Ribfest. The current bridge has very narrow shoulders for pedestrian traffic. The new bridge will also increase awareness of the existing rail systems and foster increased use. Bridge construction will require an easement which is expected to be purchased by the town. To receive the grant, the town will also have to come up with $259,848 since it is an 80/20 matching grant..
